Laparoscopic Sleeve
Gastrectomy

Denise had the Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure performed in November of 2008.

Beginning in my 40′s, I experienced progressive weight gain without weight loss over a 5 year period. Although I’ve always been fairly athletic and ”outdoorsy”, and was in general good health during those earlier years, I just could not lose the weight. I reacted to the stress of my job as an attorney and litigator by constant “eat on the run” snacks, or late night junk food meals. My weight gain was so embarrassing I was embarrassed to do the outdoor activities that helped me reduce the stress, because I looked so fat. In addition, the weight gain brought back childhood asthma and acid reflux to the point where I was hospitalized several times between 2000 and 2006. My blood sugar levels were ”pre-diabetic” just before surgery.

What were the short and long term effects of having it done?

I lost from 237 pounds at my heaviest to 133. I’ve maintained at between 135 to 139 for the past 2-1/2 years. I’ve gone from a size 22 to a size 4 to 6 in clothing. I work out 5 days a week, am back to my outdoor activities, and am totally off of all medications for asthma or acid reflux. My blood pressure, cholesterol, blood-sugar and pulse/respiration are in the healthy ranges now. I can eat just about anything but in moderation, and found that I’ve developed a taste for healthy foods, and no longer enjoy the taste or aftereffects of fried or sweet foods that were my prior temptations.

What did you think of The Bariatric Center of Kansas City’s seminar?

I started the weight loss surgery process with another clinic in Overland Park KS but became dissatisfied with their processes and switched over to the Bariatric Center. Although I had to start back again at Square One, they had a very lengthy but success-oriented approach including extensive presurgical testing, as well as six months mandatory counseling for developing awareness of those factors leading to the weight gain in the first place.

Their concept was always: (1) Patient’s safety first;
(2) Clinic’s satisfaction with Patient’s long term success capacity. Only after those two factors were satisfied did the Clinic accept me for the surgery.

What, if anything, would you differently?

I would have immediately started with Bariatric Center instead of going to the competitor first.
