The Bariatric Center of Kansas City partners with Shawnee Mission Health at Prairie Star, a Comprehensive Bariatric Center accredited by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) for exceptional medical care. High quality surgical care provided by KC Bariatric surgeons played a significant role in the achievement of this important designation to the benefit of The Bariatric Center of Kansas City and our patients.
We are located in Lenexa, Kansas, and are proudly the highest volume weight loss center in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area and the Midwest, and rank as one of the highest volume bariatric surgical centers in the country as well. Our surgeons perform surgical procedures at the Shawnee Mission Health Bariatric Surgical Hospital and Shawnee Mission Medical Center, nationally-accredited facilities that provide state-of-the-art surgical equipment and peri-operative support during surgical procedures, as well as nursing staff highly trained in providing post-bariatric surgical care.
The primary facility that we operate in was built as a “boutique” bariatric-specific specialty hospital. This means that every room, device, piece of equipment, and staff was chosen with weight-loss surgery patients in mind. It was also designed so that your office visits, seminars, classes, surgery, private-room overnight stay, and all required testing is done in a single convenient location!
Since 2002, the Bariatric Center of Kansas City has performed over 8,000 successful surgeries, with a complication rate that is much lower than the national average. The surgeons at the Bariatric Center are all Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery, and members of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery(ASMBS), in addition to also receiving the distinction of being Fellows of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). Our surgeons have undergone highly-specialized bariatric surgery fellowship training at major teaching hospitals in gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, gastric band, revisional surgery, and endoscopy. We are familiar with not only the common cases of weight-loss surgery, but also the extremely rare and difficult cases that arise; cases that other surgeons don’t want to tackle that our skilled surgeons are able to handle.
Having a staff of three Bariatric Surgeons ensures that if you have a surgical issue develop, you can count on 24/7/365 coverage by a skilled bariatric surgeon. Most other practices rely on other surgeons (who may not be trained in or familiar with bariatric surgery) cover for them if they are off for the weekend or out of town. This greatly increases the chances of a patient’s problem being misdiagnosed and mismanaged, or the patient ending up with an invasive “open” (large abdominal incision) procedure performed unnecessarily should you need urgent surgical care at that time.
The Bariatric Center of Kansas City places a high priority on all aspects of patient care, including pre- and post-surgery care. As opposed to many other practices where you may not see your surgeon more than one or two times after your bariatric surgery, we prefer to follow our patients lifelong. Follow-up care includes regular visits with your surgeon, access to our dietitians and clinical psychologists, and a variety of activities focused on social support, such as support groups and peer mentoring.
