Laparoscopic Gastric Banding “LapBand” ®

Connie had the Laparoscopic Gastric Banding procedure performed in September of 2007.

I was in very critical condition with a bad heart and every other illness associated with obesity. I was house bound and totally dependent on a mobility scooter. Which is now stored in our garage because it is no longer needed. Bariatric surgery was virtually my last chance to live and to regain a lifestyle I had enjoyed before becoming so ill.

What were the short and long term effects of having it done

Short term: regaining my health and independence.
Long term: having the privilege of enjoying my 40 plus year marriage and all the daily joys of life that I had totally lost. I have been able to regain self worth and pride in my appearance. There has not been a day go by that I have not found a reason to be thankful for having had Bariatric surgery, even being over 3 years post-op. But more importantly I am able to pay it forward by helping the new patients accomplish their goals. Having had similar challenges and struggles I enjoy encouraging them and helping them adjust to the different lifestyle and choices. The Bariatric Center of KC has such compassion for their patients that they know there is nothing like the experience of having had these struggles to be able to help with the new patients.

What did you think of The Bariatric Center of Kansas City’s seminar?

It is a wonderful opportunity for the perspective patient to get their questions answered by the Surgeons, instead of getting secondhand incorrect information. And to educate themselves so they can make a good decision as to whether it is something that will help them. It also gives them an opportunity to compare the three different surgeries so they can decide which type of surgery would best fit their expectations and lifestyle. Finally it allows them a little insight of the Surgeons’ expertise, personalities and expectations.

What, if anything, would you differently?

My only regret is that I waited so long to have Bariatric surgery. It has truly given back the quality of life I so enjoyed and appreciated. It is such a pleasure to not have the internal conversation that I am the biggest person everywhere I go. It’s not a ‘magic wand’ and it takes work on my part. But what a pleasure it has been to know if I follow the simple rules I will succeed. I have the utmost respect and appreciation for Dr. Hoehn and PA Stallard and their Bariatric Practice.
